Ian, my fave Aussie photographer, and I shot this look when he was visiting the US. He came here all alone and stayed for a month exploring New York, California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona Colorado and some other places… HOW AWESOME IS THAT?! I know – gloriously awesome and you wish you had the cojones to partake in such an adventure. Traveling alone is definitely something everyone should try at least once – it truly is life changing and you grow up real quick. Read about my experiences here and here.
If you haven’t already noticed, the Hudson River is my favorite place for most of my activities so I of course showed Ian the area and we explored for quite a bit while talking about the differences in our cultures, languages – just daily life habits really. I naturally became his tour guide and showed him my favorite spots just as I would want someone to do for me when I visit a foreign place for the first time. I have actually done this a lot the past year -cool, creative people hit me up from out of the country – typically photographers or journalists – and then I show them around the city, we take some pics, sometimes do interviews, go out for drinks, usually end up at events or clubs and then we become best friends. It’s magnificent. A huge reason why I love New York.
The tables were turned when I went to Milan and Malta alone this year and it was the most unforgettable experience. (Shoutout to Bianca, her beau, Nenad and Franz – best time/memories ever!) When you’re traveling alone and you’re foreign, people love to learn about your culture and plus you want to be submerged into their culture for the full, authentic experience. It’s a beautiful thing.
So back to NYC. This past weekend I went kayaking with some friends and it was kind of amazing -I’ll definitely be back and I recommend it to anyone. And yes it is on the Hudson. Here are some pics to entice you.
